Pole fitness has recently became a new way for women to step up their exercise regimens. Classes are high-energy, fun, and will often leave the woman feeling powerful and sexy. But like any other fitness alternative, pole-dancing classes can be difficult for newcomers.
Pole fitness requires endurance and strength from many different muscle groups. Upon taking your first class, you may feel as if you can’t keep up or it’s too fast-paced. It’s all about mindset. Just as if you were taking Spinning or Zumba classes, you must push through to get the results you want.
“Stick with it”, Elaine Edwards, owner of Respectapole Dance Fitness says, “pole fitness is fun and exciting, but it can be frustrating at first. Relax, go at your own pace and don't give up! Pole fitness is a process and takes time to learn."
Edwards' advice may be easier said than done, but it's important to stay optimistic. "For someone new to pole fitness, it usually takes about 5-6 classes to really get the hang of things. Everyone feels nervous and awkward when they first start, but don't be too hard on yourself. Remember, practice makes perfect.”

Keep Your Head Up!
For those looking to start a pole fitness class, don’t be discouraged. Pole fitness has various benefits for the body. Here’s a few tips for those a bit reluctant about their next class.
Stretch: Both before and after. Stretching prevents pulling of muscles and reduces soreness.
Lower your expectations: Remember that pole fitness classes are supposed to be fun. Don't expect to look as fluid as your instructor (who has taken classes for more than a year). It takes time and practice to become a pole-"fessional".
Visit the Intro to Pole Class: Everyone is new in this class. The instructor covers the basics in a less intimidating environment.
Start at your own pace: So what if the lady next to you could be a Cirque Du Soleil extra? She had to start somewhere to achieve her skill! If something’s a bit tough, start slowly and try again. Not working the second time around? Then…
Ask for help: If you’ve tried a particular move a couple of times and couldn’t quite get it, ask your instructor for a few pointers. She may even have a modified version of a move.
Take advantage of private lessons: Looking for individualized attention? Respectapole offers one-on-one classes with an instructor. You can really focus on difficult maneuvers and poses form your previous class.
Remember the basics: When things get tough, always revert to your basics. Are you breathing? Are your hands turned in the right position? Is your balance shifted on the proper side? Basics can correct a difficult situation and help you push through a workout.
Remember to have fun: Pole fitness is an alternative to standard workouts at the gym. Not many exercises include aerodynamics and flexibility. Take advantage of its creative aspect and have fun!
